Know your Joes

When I was 20 a coworker dropped a cigar on my desk, and said here, you are one of the boys now?  I had never smoked a true hand rolled cigar before. That afternoon I had the cigar at lunch, and 12 years later the rest is history. I am of the strong belief that a cigar is a requirement for just about any occasion. There is something about the flavor of a full bodied cigar that just makes you think everything is perfect, if only for a brief distraction from the everyday. Thing is though, no matter how bad, long or boring a day may be, I always know that there is a cigar to look forward to at the end of it (add a whisky, and even better!). I love a good Davidoff, but let’s be realistic, at about $20 a stick, it’s not easy on the pocket to make it a everyday smoke! So I continue the never-ending quest to find that great smoke, be it wrapped in a Connecticut, Sumatra, or Maduro leaf, I can’t wait to try them all. I look forward to sharing my recommendations with you, and trying some of yours.

What makes us so specialWhy should anyone listen to us?

It is a valid question and one that deserves an answer. We are no one exceptional, we are not specially trained in the art of tobacco. Neither one of us is the in the industry. We are consumers, much like you. We are in fact the working schmuck. There is one thing that sticks out in my mind that would not say would count as a qualification but an analogy to our smoking knowledge. Marc and I were at a Yankee’s game in 08 and met up with a social smoker friend of ours, for a pre-game smoke. We’ll call him “Joe”, and he is someone that likes to smoke but not enough to buy a humidor or get seriously invested in enjoying cigars. I always bring a couple extra as I expected him to ask for a smoke. He’s a good guy and we enjoy his company, a smoke for good conversation is well worth the trade. I hand him his choice of 3 cigars, and before I can tell him what they are he picks one, cuts it and lights it. I ask “Joe”, don’t you want to know what it is? He responds “Every time I bum a cigar off you guys I’m never disappointed, you guys only smoke the good stuff.”
